Born in Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria, Azzedine Layachi completed his university studies at the University of Algiers. He obtained a degree from the Institute of Political Studies at the University of Algiers before pursuing his studies in the United States.

Azzedine Layachi is currently a Professor of Government and Politics at St. John's University. His research interests include economic development, political change, political Islam, Middle East politics, African politics, and the politics of ethnicity.
