Origins & Education

Rachid Deriche was born in 1954 in Thenia, Algeria. His academic journey began in his native country, where he studied electronics at the National Polytechnic School of Algiers, laying the foundation for his future scientific career.

In 1977, driven by a desire to deepen his knowledge, he moved to France to continue his studies at the National School of Telecommunications in Paris, from which he graduated in 1979. This rigorous training at one of France's prestigious engineering schools allowed him to acquire solid expertise in telecommunications engineering.

His taste for research and applied mathematics led him to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Paris IX Dauphine, which he obtained in 1982. Ten years later, in 1991, he completed his academic journey by obtaining his Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, thus establishing his status as a leading researcher.

Scientific Career

Rachid Deriche is currently a Research Director at INRIA Sophia Antipolis, France, where he leads the research project Athena. This ambitious project aims to explore the central nervous system using computational imaging, combining expertise in image processing, computer vision, and neuroimaging.

His scientific career is marked by major contributions in several fields. In 1987, he developed the Deriche Edge Detector, an optimal edge detection algorithm, recursively implemented, based on Canny's edge detector criteria. This algorithm, which bears his name, has become a reference in the field of image processing.

In 1998, building on his work in computational image processing, early vision, 3D reconstruction, panoramic photography, image-based modeling, and motion analysis, he co-founded with his INRIA colleagues (including O. Faugeras, T. Papadopoulo, and L. Robert) the startup Realviz. This company specialized in image-based content creation solutions for the film, broadcast, gaming, digital imaging, and architecture sectors. The startup was acquired by Autodesk in 2008, testifying to the value of its innovations.

Currently, Rachid Deriche is dedicating his research to exploring the central nervous system. He is developing mathematical models and tools to reconstruct the network of functional and anatomical connections in the brain, thus contributing to advances in computational neuroscience and brain imaging.
