BETTAYEB Maamar

Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research

University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Background & Education

Maamar Bettayeb was born on June 7, 1953, and is a prominent Algerian researcher, specialist in control theory, educator, and inventor. He is particularly recognized for his work on singular value decomposition and model reduction.

After his primary and middle school education in Beni Amrane, he continued his studies at the Tizi Ouzou Polyvalent High School in 1969 in the mathematics track. Obtaining his baccalaureate with honors in 1972 opened the doors to a state scholarship to study in the United States, at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles.

There, he successively obtained a bachelor's degree in automatic control in 1976, a master's degree in 1978, and his doctorate in 1981 in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His thesis, entitled "Approximation of Linear Systems: New Approaches Based on Singular Value Decomposition," was supervised by Professor Emeritus Leonard M. Silverman.

Scientific Career

His professional career began in 1981-1982 as a researcher at the Bellaire Research Center of Shell Oil Development Company in Houston, Texas, where he developed deconvolution algorithms for processing seismic signals for oil and gas exploration.

Upon returning to Algeria, he joined the Center for Advanced Technology Development (CDTA) where he directed the instrumentation and control department from 1982 to 1988. There, he led various research and development projects in the field of modeling, simulation, and design of large-scale energy systems, with applications in nuclear, solar, wind, and electrical domains.

He later emigrated to Saudi Arabia where he taught at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran from 1988 to 1990. In 2000, he joined the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates as a professor, holding various research and administrative positions. Since September 2014, he has held the position of Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research.

Concurrently, he is an associate professor in automatic control and signal processing at the Center of Excellence in Intelligent Engineering Systems (CEIES) at King Abdulaziz University.

Distinctions & Recognition

Maamar Bettayeb has received numerous distinctions for his work, including several Best Researcher awards at the University of Sharjah (2001-2002, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2010-2011), the Best Research Paper award from the Islamic Bank of Sharjah (2003-2004), and the IEOM Distinguished Leadership Award in 2020.

His impressive academic career includes more than 350 publications in scientific journals and conferences. He has also served as an external examiner for electrical engineering programs at the University of Malaysia (2001-2004) and as a visiting professor at Helsinki University of Technology in Finland (2001-2003).

Impact & Influence

He currently continues his research activities as director of the research group on intelligent systems at the University of Sharjah, where he has also led the development of strategic research planning. His expertise is regularly sought as a consultant for the petrochemical industry, and he participates in numerous R&D projects in the fields of control and signal processing.

Dr. Bettayeb's contributions to control theory and signal processing have had significant impact in both academic and industrial settings. His work on singular value decomposition has influenced approaches to model reduction and system analysis, while his leadership in research administration has helped shape the research landscape at the University of Sharjah.
