Origins & Education

Lahouari Addi was born on April 21, 1949, in Oran, Algeria, into a cultured bourgeois family. His youth unfolded in a post-independence Algeria undergoing profound transformation, which would deeply shape his understanding of the Arab world and its socio-political dynamics.

His academic journey reflects rigorous and international training. He first earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and economics from the University of Oran in 1973, then continued his studies in France where he obtained a DEA (Master's degree) in economics from the University of Grenoble in 1974. His interest in sociological analysis led him to defend his first doctorate in sociology at Grenoble in 1976.

Continuing his pursuit of academic excellence, he earned a State Doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in 1987, thus consolidating his expertise in the analysis of contemporary Maghrebi and Arab societies.
