She was appointed to this strategic position in one of the UN's most complex peacekeeping missions. For four years, she contributed to the country's stabilization, civilian protection, and reconstruction of Congolese democratic institutions.
In this crucial four-year mandate, she became the global voice for children victims of armed conflict. She worked tirelessly to:
- End the recruitment and use of child soldiers
- Protect children from sexual violence during wartime
- Facilitate humanitarian access to children in conflict zones
- Promote reintegration of former child combatants
She returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo as head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), one of the UN's largest peacekeeping missions, leading over 16,000 peacekeepers and civilian personnel.
